Santa at WGB

Santa’s Workshop

Each year at Women Giving Back Santa’s Workshop, volunteers and homeless families come together to celebrate the joyous and magical spirit of the holidays.

The philosophy behind Santa’s Workshop allows mothers the option to choose gifts and bicycles, empowering them and allowing them to contribute to their children’s happiness and quality of life, free from financial concerns and limitations. It gives moms a chance to be Santa. We love knowing that they will not have to choose between paying for basic necessities or gifts this year.

Over 100 volunteer “elves” braved the first snow of the season. Carolers from Capital Harmonica Club greeted families with holiday melodies as they made their way in.

Santa at WGB

Children got to meet Santa and make crafts that they can give to parents, teachers, friends and other loved ones. Meanwhile, moms got to "shop" from thousands of new toys, bikes and other gifts collected from generous donors throughout the region.

Northern Virginia is known for its high household incomes, but the level of poverty is increasing with almost 140,000 people across the region living in poverty. Families experiencing homelessness or extreme poverty often do not have the chance to spend time with their children outside of the stress of their everyday lives and are not able to give their children the same experiences as their peers. These families need support systems and that is why we continue to do what we do.

Each year Santa’s Workshop serves over 600 children through referrals from shelters, transitional housing and human services programs, medical facilities, schools, government agencies.

FitBit Challenge

On October 1st, ShounBach Law Firm started an interoffice FitBit challenge. In teams of five, they competed against each other for a total of 4 weeks. At the end of the challenge, the winning team had a contribution made from the Firm to their favorite charity. Team 1 (Dan Schy, Patricia Palmer, Hira Mahmood and Ann Drake) took the lead with a total of 1,525,139 steps! Their donation was split between Women Giving Back and the Fairfax County SPCA.

By the end of the competition, the Firm walked a total of 5,880,482 steps which roughly equates to 2,940 miles! To put that in context, if they walked from our office to San Francisco, we’d still have about 150 miles to spare.

What a cool idea to stay fit and give back!
