Women Giving Back

Cinco, Cinco, Cinco!!!

Cinco de Mayo 2016

Just when we think it can’t get any better, it does! This year WGB raised over $120,000, which is a 33% increase from last year! There was a record number of attendees as well. The proceeds from this event provide direct support for the WGB program helping us to help those in crisis.

WGB’s Cinco success is thanks to you – our sponsors, attendees and volunteers. Each year we ask for your help and each year you continue to give generously. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

WGB was joined by Dignitaries, Board Members and the Knutson Companies for the ribbon cutting ceremony to start off the Cinco event. Thank you again to the Knutson Company for the build out of our space.

Store News

Volunteers photo

Not only were our clients surprised and impressed by the new space, but so were our volunteers! One volunteer was overheard saying “it looks like Macy’s – there are dedicated departments!” Jewelry, accessories and an expanded children’s section make shopping easier for clients.

Rep. Barbara Comstock paid a visit and took the time to talk with clients as well as volunteers. Rep. Comstock will be hosting her Young Women’s Leadership Conference at the WGB Store later this month.

Stories from the Store

“I left my job to care for my special needs son and ended up losing my house, cars and possessions. After being evicted from our home, we went to the Katherine Hanley shelter for 9 months to rebuild. My case worker at the shelter was the one introduced me to the wonderful women at Women Giving Back. Without them, I wouldn’t have the shoes on my feet or the clothes on my back. I wouldn’t have clothes to interview in.

Today is my last day shopping at WGB. I am working full time and I have a place to live. My husband, son and I are thriving. We lost everything, but not each other.

Don’t forget my smiling face. You’ll now see me volunteering at WGB.”

Vera’s Story Cont.

Last December we had the privilege of meeting Vera. She came to WGB for an outfit to interview in but was burdened with trying to pay a $500 lapse in grant so that her daughter, Shekinah, could register for spring classes. Shekinah is a scholarship softball player at Virginia Union University.

That December day, a very special group from Unanet, along with some other wonderful volunteers, reached into their pockets and collected the $500 that Vera needed to send to the tuition office. To say it was emotional would be an understatement.

Today we met Shekinah. Today we saw a joyous Vera. They drove into WGB with a carload of donations so that they could give back to those who gave to them and to share some wonderful news.

Shekinah just earned the Division II Degree Completion Award, which will pay for her 5th year tuition, fees, and books. She was also offered a Resident Assistant position, which will provide her housing.

Shekinah did all this while living in a shelter. Think you can’t accomplish something? Shekinah said that’s in the back of her mind all the time. But she persevered.

Vera is still living in the shelter working the night desk shift in the hopes of finding employment soon.

Raven at HubDot

Our friend and client, Raven, recently spoke at a HubDot Event about the Transformational Journey of Motherhood. Raven delivered an inspiring speech on not only losing her job and home, but her voice. She spoke about the struggles of telling her two children they were going to live in a shelter. But Raven has found her voice! She now has a home and started a new job this week! Congrats Raven!
