Our Mission

WGB’s mission is to support women and children in crisis, and build their confidence and self-esteem, by providing great quality clothing at no cost, assisted by caring and committed volunteers who offer personalized service and interaction.

Volunteers

Our greatest asset is our volunteers. Please join us in making a difference in someone’s life. You can help sort clothing, be a personal shopper, raise funds, coordinate a donation drive, facilitate corporate & community outreach and much more.

The Store

The WGB Store is filled with wonderful clothing, accessories, shoes and more for our clients that are currently in shelters or transitional programs. We open a number of days each month or by appointment. Clients are referred by their Case Managers. Our clients leave standing much straighter and prouder than when they walk in.

Dear Friends,
After founding WGB in 2007 and serving as President for the past ten years, I’m thrilled to announce we are beginning our first year of succession. I will continue to serve on the Board and help our tremendous leaps forward year after year. Denise Harrover will serve as our next President and I have full confidence that under her leadership, we will continue to thrive.

The women and children we clothe are moving forward with their lives, knowing someone out there is rooting for them. It’s a small thing, but in many cases, WGB is the turning point in their journey.

I’d like to thank everyone for their support over the years, and let’s all come together to make 2018 the best yet. Come join us!

  • We celebrated our 10-year Anniversary! Congresswoman Barbara Comstock and Delegate John Bell commemorated the 10 years of service to the community with Congressional declarations.
  • Women Giving Back was honored at the annual Cornerstones of Our Community – 2017 Best of Reston Awards as winner of the Best of Reston Civic-Community Engagement award.
  • We collected over 3,000 new toys, bikes and gifts in December and Santa’s workshop provided 780 Children with toys for the holiday season.
  • WGB was a recipient of a $10k grant from the Loudoun Impact Fund to expand our youth programs.
  • Case Manager & Social Worker Open House and Community Resource Fair had 16 Exhibitors, 65 Case Managers and Social Workers from 28 organizations.
  • WGB was a finalist for the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce’s Nonprofit of the Year Award.
  • The warehouse got a new garment lift to store offseason clothing. Thanks to TJMAXX and installed by Southern Electric.
  • WGB’s first annual Volunteer of the Year awards were awarded to Melissa Fox (Individual) and the National Charity League Group in recognition of their service at WGB and the community.

The women who walk through the doors at Women Giving Back have lost so much. Some of their losses are large - employment, housing, health. Some of their losses, so traumatic that they can never be reclaimed. I am humbled by the stories of these women’s bravery, resiliency and determination through those tough losses and grateful to see their transformations as they rebuild their lives.

At WGB we get to see our mission in action every day and transformation doesn’t just apply to the women we serve. As an organization we try to continuously evolve so we can more effectively meet the complex and changing needs of the women and children in our region. Over the last few years, economic gaps have widened, cost of living has increased, more people are experiencing poverty and homelessness than ever before. This is evident as we had an 86% increase in the number of women we served from last year. To meet the needs and better serve our clients in 2018, we have invested in new programs and services, many you will see in this report are focused on children and youth to help reduce the lasting impact and alleviate the visible burden of poverty.

With a new hire of our Program Coordinator, Hunner Rezik we have expanded our capacity to support these new programs and are ready for a new year of making a difference in so many lives. None of this would be possible without the vital support YOU provide us and our thriving network of volunteers.

As we look ahead, we will continue to learn and adapt, looking for opportunities to more effectively serve and empower women to move permanently out of poverty.

WGB Boutique: WGB partners with Referral Agency Partners who share a common mission of serving their communities by providing services that are connected through client referrals. WGB is proud to be recognized as a valuable resource partner to these Referral Agency Partners which are shelters, transitional and permanent supportive housing programs, medical facilities, group homes, schools, government agencies and faith based organizations. These partners send their eligible clients and residents to WGB through our secured online referral registration system.

Once any referral is received and approved by WGB, the shopper attends one of the month’s store day shifts that is convenient for them. WGB holds four dedicated Store Days each month to allow women to shop for clothing for themselves and their children, free of charge. Upon arrival, the client checks in and gets a shopping bag and shopping list showing they can take up to 50 items of clothing. Volunteers are on hand to help them shop and assist them pick out appropriate clothing for interviews, work and day to day life. Childcare and breakfast is provided onsite in their designated play area. WGB also holds private shopping days for shelters and organizations to transport their clients (group sizes range from 8 to 45 shoppers) at a convenient time for their staff and drivers.

Bag to Go Program: This program was started because of the emergency need and demand for client’s that cannot wait to attend the next store day. Bag to Go request forms are submitted by case managers or social workers who gather information on the women and children’s clothing, shoes sizes and other information to help a volunteer pack the bag with appropriate clothing for the client and children. The majority of WGB’s Bag to Go requests come from domestic violence shelters as they are fleeing their abusers with nothing but the clothes on their back. We also receive Bag to Go orders from Human Trafficking and Inmate Re-Entry programs as well as Government Agencies such as FBI Victim Services. The Bag to Go is picked up by the case manager/social worker/agent.

Community Distributor Partner Program (CDP): The CDP program is offered to our community partners as an opportunity to make a bigger impact on the people that they directly serve. WGB serves as a “hub” for quality clothing donations for the Greater Washington Metro area. CDPs are “redistributors” who have staff or volunteers pick up clothing from WGB or a WGB Volunteer delivers it (within a 30-mile radius) and the CDP gives it to their clients free of charge at their own locations.

WGB is a resource for organizations too small or not suited to handle large quantities of donations. By becoming a WGB CDP, these dedicated agencies and organizations can offer their community an improved quality, quantity and variety of clothing donations.

The WGB CDP network includes Title 1 schools, low-income job training programs, places of worship, disaster relief aid, overseas missions and other organizations who have identified a need for clothing in their communities or among their clients and constituents. Through this innovative collaboration WGB and the CDP can address micro-pockets of poverty currently not being served and we can collectively leverage fundraising dollars and reduce costs.

Snack Pack Program: WGB helps supply kids with nutritional breakfasts and snacks while their mothers shop, because these children often miss their meal at the shelter in order to come into WGB’s facility. We recently launched the Snack Pack program as a compliment to this mission after noticing that the only meals that many of WGB’s children who are not living in shelters receive is at school. Under the Snack Pack program, we serve children with food to take home. Snack packs are filled with two-day meals during the school year, summer and other school breaks. Snack packs are prepared by volunteer groups and are usually assembled at an off-site location and delivered to WGB.

Back to School Supplies Program: When their needs for clothing and school supplies are met, students are better able to attend school and participate in their education. This program provides children and youth in kindergarten through high school from low-income families with back to school clothes, shoes, and school supplies for the upcoming school year. Having appropriate clothing boosts students’ self-esteem and alleviates the visible burden of poverty. As a result, students are more incentivized to attend school because they can do so without feeling different. Students are able to focus on their education, instead of worrying about “fitting in.”

Prom Dress Program: WGB’s Prom Boutique is an annual initiative created to meet the needs of homeless students during the prom season. The goal is to make every young woman feel special, beautiful, empowered, and confident. Receiving a gown presents an opportunity to experience a once-in-a-lifetime event they might otherwise not be able to participate in due to the expense of purchasing a dress. They also get to “shop” for jewelry, shoes, purse, make-up and even nail polish, all of it free.

Halloween Costume Program: WGB helps over 300 children express their inner ghoul, superhero, and princess every October by providing them free Halloween costumes.

Holiday Gifts for Kids Program: Our annual Santa’s Workshop serves over 700 economically disadvantaged children, bringing the magic of the holidays with the help of more than 100 volunteer elves. The philosophy behind Santa’s Workshop allows mothers the option to choose gifts and bicycles, empowering them and allowing them to contribute to their children’s happiness and quality of life, free from financial concerns and limitations. Santa’s Workshop “shopping” is both a fun and empowering event that allows mothers to experience the joys that come from their children having a happy holiday.

In October Women Giving Back held a Case Manager & Social Worker Open House and Community Resource Fair connecting those working on the front lines in the community to combat poverty, homelessness and help families move to self-sufficiency across the region. At this event, they were be able to raise awareness of their organization’s resources and programs. Training for case managers and social workers on human trafficking was provided through partnership with Northern Virginia Human Trafficking Initiative to give more knowledge to the case managers and social workers. This aided them in their outreach efforts and provided support for their client population.

In addition, WGB hosted a self-care and stress reduction workshop to support the case managers’ and school social workers’ well-being. Turnover is extremely high in this industry, especially those in the early stages of their careers. The selfcare training equipped them with the tools to help manage their stressful environment and their overwhelming job demands.

2017 Cinco de Mayo event
Cinco de Mayo

Aside from donor and partner contributions, the annual Cinco de Mayo event is the largest fundraiser Women Giving Back hosts. The party brings out over 300+ guests who participate in a silent auction, raffle drawings, tequila and wine tastings and lots of dancing. It brings in over $100,000 and that money is used to help sustain the yearly expenses incurred by the organization which include rent, store supplies, and operating needs.

In 2017 the focus for the event was to reach new businesses and foundations who they haven’t worked with in the past to raise awareness and funding for our cause.

I considered myself a self-assured woman who had embraced my fluffy curves and was accustomed to dressing for style and comfortability. Being a working divorced mother of two, I kept the normal standards in my closet - a couple of work suits, several pairs of slacks for work, some button down blouses, and sweaters for layering effects. When living in Northern Virginia, you can start out very cold in the morning, and it’ll be sweltering by midafternoon. My closet along with my children’s reflected just that, being prepared for the change in weather regardless of the season.

When I lost my job in the fall of 2015, I was not prepared. I relied on quick thinking to pack a bag for each of us with enough clothes for 10 days. The rest I put in storage as we were evicted from our home and officially homeless. I never realized how much my clothes felt like my uniform. They were my working mom uniform. I felt a part of my community as that working mom. Now here I was without a uniform. I felt like a hermit, outcast by society. I felt invisible. This was all a part of my guilt for allowing this to occur to my family which subsequently led to depression. While I was okay with the world continuing on without me, my children continued to grow and needed clothing. Our belongings that were in storage were sold due to me not having any money. I had found rock bottom. My case worker at the shelter referred me to an organization which had gently used clothing for women and children. He made me an appointment. I did not want to go because I felt fine where I was but my kids didn’t feel fine.

I went to Women Giving Back where I met one of their amazing volunteers. What was so amazing about their volunteer is she met me where I was. She didn’t force me to try on something just because she thought it was cute or because it was all they had in my size. She talked to me. Melissa asked me if I was I looking forward to New Years. She asked relevant questions like “did I have any job prospects on the horizon”. She instructed other volunteers on how to help my children look for clothes that they needed like hoodies and sweaters. I had found someone I trusted with my vulnerability, and she embraced it and loved on it. I later found out all of their volunteers have similar spirits where it’s not just trying to find items in a specific size or making something work because you’re in need. They genuinely want you to enjoy your experience but to restore something inside of you that was lost. I left feeling renewed and accepted. I found a new uniform that was not defined by my circumstance. My new uniform was filled with confidence, happiness, a glimmer of faith and overall acceptance. I felt a part of a community again.

When a co-worker or stranger compliments my attire, outwardly I’m appreciative for the gesture. On the inside, I’m having a dance party of acceptance. The WGB community has grown as well as the need has continued to grow. Being able to help other women and children feel the same acceptance I feel every day is why I continue to support them. I’m an active member of the WGB community and continue to share my story with others to let them know of this wonderful organization. The difference they have made in me will never be forgotten.
